I'm glad it was helpful.
The bike has been amazing. 9000km now ridden.
The only long-term thing I would flag is that the steering cables on our bike became increasingly stiff after a few thousand kilometres. I don't know whether they suffered some particular contamination but once they started to deteriorate they was no way back. I bought new cables last year and replaced them myself. Tricky job but not too bad. Steering is now silky again and will stay like that for a few years. Cables were £80 I think, from London Green Cycles.
Enjoy!
Martinquickerbybikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08410099827893470951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8991732159572355963.post-54324975499784391652023-12-07T16:46:35.830-08:002023-12-07T16:46:35.830-08:00Thanks for the well written review. It might have given some extra reassurance when we were transporting our boys as babies but I ran the front tyre a little soft and supported the melia seat on foam. The boys seem fine!

I Douze G4 has front suspension and I would expect it to work well. I wouldn't mind having that (whereas on anything but a mountain bike I usually think suspension is an annoying extra weight and maintenance hassle).

The rear suspension on the Riese and Muller definitely looks like extra maintenance and complication for zero benefit in an urban environment.quickerbybikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08410099827893470951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8991732159572355963.post-66210153989733751522020-09-23T03:31:56.094-07:002020-09-23T03:31:56.094-07:00By the way, one more question, are you missing sus...By the way, one more question, are you missing suspension at all? Or are the vibrations manageable? I’m asking because I am also considering an R&M load 60, which does have full suspension, but seems smaller and not the feature of disassembling the bike in two. We use at least four days per week and usually twice on those days. We could not live without it.
We used a Melia Baby Seat. Our baby was in the bike from six weeks old next to his brother who was two and a bit. Once the youngest was sitting up ok we just put the boys side by side on the bench and they are still like that now (one is 2.5 and the other is 4).

I'm going to add a photo of the melia seat to the blog above.

Martinquickerbybikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08410099827893470951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8991732159572355963.post-47563677742395415092020-09-14T00:24:21.824-07:002020-09-14T00:24:21.824-07:00Hi Martin,

I have one question regarding transporting two small children though, one of which a baby. Is it possible to have one baby seat and another child in the 600 box at the same time? Would be very interested to know how you configured this!

ReiniReinihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10905526676052743562noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8991732159572355963.post-45421755221710034062019-11-05T04:02:34.339-08:002019-11-05T04:02:34.339-08:00Hi Wouter. The bike is even more central to our lives now than before. We ride into Richmond Park at least once a week. Our two children, now 3 and 1.5, are very happy in the bike.

I haven't missed e-assist. I am pretty fit and would rather not have it. My wife is very much less fit but can still get wherever she wants to go on the bike.

Most things are on our doorstep so journeys in the Douze are typically 10km round tip.

E-assist makes the bike a more complete car-replacement. If I were doing your 10k each way school run I'd stick with (and enjoy) the current Douze. If my wife were doing that school run regularly then I would start to think about the e-assist.

There. I'm not sure how to answer. The Douze is no slouch. 10k on flat roads with smooth surfaces is a doddle.

Martinquickerbybikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08410099827893470951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8991732159572355963.post-55265691446489498842019-09-17T02:29:59.021-07:002019-09-17T02:29:59.021-07:00Fantastic review. The bracket supplied bolts to an existing threaded hole on the floor of the Douze. The seat-belt straps thread through this. The feet end of the seat sits on the Douze child bench. Under the head end of the seat, where it rests (and is strapped to) the front of the box, I have put some egg-shell foam.

Our boy, now 11 months, sleeps there frequently. We see lots of couriers with them in London. Handsome bike. Your grandchildren are lucky. But it's not really about them is it! For me the Douze is fun for ME.
I know what you mean about the Alfine 11. The more oil you put in, the more comes out. Messy. So I stopped putting oil in. I rode it for 10,000km before selling. Now we only have Alfine 8 (one the Douze and one other) and these do not leak since they are lived with grease rather than oil. I doubt I will ever have them serviced and I bet they will never go wrong.
Happy cycling. Thanks again.
Martin quickerbybikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08410099827893470951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8991732159572355963.post-80477489693636683312018-06-27T06:52:38.066-07:002018-06-27T06:52:38.066-07:00Great review, very informative. We saw the Douze ...Great review, very informative. We saw the Douze in April at VeloBerlin and were impressed. Obviously, well thought out by designers that understand the use. For those in hilly cities, the Douze can be had with the Brose e-assist systems, which is considered one of the best.

We have a Bullitt Steps E8000, but our children are grown and only expect the occasional grandchild to go for a ride. With the Bullitt, we find the aluminum frame a bit stiff vertically, when ridden on our potholed roads in the U.S. So a little vertical compliance is not necessarily a bad thing. ;-)

I did have a city bike with an Alfine 11-speed and the seals gave out at about 1,500 km, leaking all the oil out. So something to be mindful of.Augsburghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06109555620818668190noreply@blogger.com
